EF File Catalog is capable of cataloging files, folders and even entire disks. The purpose of this functionality is to relieve you from looking through CDs or other removable drives, one by one, for a specific item. Of course, this brings other advantages as well, like the possibility of locating a specific file on the entire hard drive instantly.

The software is free to try for a limited period of time, without any functionality restrictions. Installing it on a computer doesn't take more than a minute, even with low-end hardware. You can use the software on any popular Windows version and you don't have to meet any special requirements.

EF File Catalog's user interface is laid out like a standard explorer window, but it has more options, which you will actually use. Instead of displaying local folders in the navigation pane, on the left side of the window, the software displays cataloged items. It allows you to create more than one catalog and save them as separate files. What's more, EF File Catalog can display multiple catalogs at the same time, in the same navigation pane, even if they are from separate files.

Cataloging data is a straightforward operation. You only need to select a folder or a drive and type in a label, on a separate window, but you can make other specifications as well, like selecting a category and a group, writing comments and more. Cataloged files are displayed in their original folders structure. Instead of opening a file, the application will bring up a properties window for that item, when you double click it.

Once your files are cataloged, you can use the software's functions to locate files instantly, identify duplicates, copy paths and more. As previously suggested, the best use for this kind of functionality is for removable media, like CDs or USB drives. If you are not sure which device contains a particular file, you can browse through your catalogs to find it.

Pros

You can catalog large amounts of data quickly. The software allows you to open multiple catalogs simultaneously. You can search for cataloged files and locate duplicates much faster.

Cons

The trial version will show a nag screen on a regular basis. While using EF File Catalog, you will be able to locate specific files instantly, even if they are not on your hard drive.
